Pregnancy and childbirth is one of the leading causes of death in women of reproductive age in Africa. In some countries, the lifetime risk of pregnancy-related deaths is as high as 1 in 7.
Maternity Worldwide is saving lives in childbirth by helping those women who most need access to professional care. With the help of donors, they are achieving this through the employment and training of medical and midwifery staff, setting up women's community education and empowerment groups and providing a Safe Birth Fund for those unable to pay for care.
On Friday 20th February, in association with Maternity Worldwide, the Firecat crew are running a fundraising night at The Loft in Ship Street, Brighton.
Stiltwalkers, Pop Banjo duo The Disappointments , Drag from Jenny Taylor and visitors from the Sussex Magic Circle will be coming together to provide a night of fun and fundraising, set to a soundtrack of top Indie tunes from Brighton Dj's Muffy and WISIWIG.
Tickets will be availiable on the door and are £6, or £4.50 conc. Guests must be over 18.

A new play by Gillian Plowman
For the last eight years, foreign journalists have been banned from Zimbabwe. For the last eight years, orphaned Zimbabwean children have written to the playwright Gillian Plowman.
Inspired by these funny, quirky, joyful, sad and often poetic letters, Yours Abundantly, from Zimbabwe tells the story of Nell, a white British woman who travels to Zimbabwe on holiday and meets a young orphan boy named Enock. The subsequent correspondence between the two of them forms the basis of this poignant and heartbreaking tale, and offers a powerful glimpse into the lives of those living in the shadow of Mugabe.
Cast includes Gillian Wright, Aïcha Kossoko and Nicholas Beveney,
and Zimbabwean actors Denton Chikura and Tonderai Munyevu.

Glade Festival
July 20th-22nd
Stiltwalking, walkabout & character comedy at the 2007 Glade Festival
"The Glade Festival, now in it's 4th year, is on the weekend of the 20th-22nd July. Having been the renegade dance stage at Glastonbury, it exploded out into its own multi-genre music festival and has steadily grown to be the premier cutting edge electronic music event in the UK. With a strong aversion to all things corporate and mainstream and with a great love of all things alternative, underground and interesting, the Glade this year will have a mind boggling array of artistic ideas; musically, sonically, visually and extra sensorily, from all over the world.."
More information can be found on the Glade Website

(Copy shamelessly stolen from www.darkarts.org.uk – thanks Asha!)
The Oxford Dark Masquerade
January 27th 2007
In January 2007, The Oxford Masquerade filled the ballroom of Oxford's prestigious Randolph Hotel with a sumptuous masquerade ball laid on in the theme of "A Dance With the Damned". Firecat Masquerade was involved from the early stages back in October 2006. We provided decoration, spectacle and performers for the evening who played everything from entertainers as the guests arrived, to guards at the door of the ballroom, to the set-piece entertainments throughout the evening. The night culminated in the arrival of trio of stilt-walking angels, stalking in to the delight of the guests.
